Cayucos Beach Cleanup expected for the next 5 years
Cayucos State Beach is set to undergo regular cleanups over the next five years to remove driftwood and other debris that accumulate, particularly after winter storms. This initiative, backed by local officials, aims to enhance public safety, preserve beach access, and protect infrastructure like the pier, playground, and seawall from potential damage.
The large amounts of driftwood washing ashore originate from Cayucos Creek and have been known to cover significant portions of the beach, making it difficult for visitors to walk or enjoy the shoreline. Community members and beachgoers have expressed concerns over the growing debris, prompting San Luis Obispo County Supervisor Bruce Gibson to secure a waiver from the Coastal Commission. This waiver allows for necessary cleanups to ensure the beach remains safe and accessible year-round.
Local residents have already noticed improvements, with cleaner pathways and fewer obstacles making it easier to enjoy the beach. By committing to this multi-year effort, officials and volunteers are demonstrating their dedication to keeping Cayucos State Beach a welcoming and pristine destination for both locals and visitors.
This cleanup initiative highlights the community’s proactive approach to environmental stewardship, ensuring that Cayucos remains a cherished coastal gem for years to come. Visitors and residents alike can look forward to a safer, cleaner beach experience, reinforcing the town’s commitment to maintaining its natural beauty and accessibility.
